Pirates owner Bob Nutting expressed that the decision was driven by the team’s underperformance and the need for a change in direction. “The first quarter of the season has been frustrating and painful for all of us,” Nutting stated. “We have to do better. I know that. Ben knows that. Our coaches know that. Our players know that.”
Despite entering the season with high hopes, including the presence of reigning NL Rookie of the Year Paul Skenes, the Pirates have struggled offensively and defensively. The team ranks 29th in runs scored and 26th in team ERA. Additionally, off-field controversies, such as the replacement of a Roberto Clemente tribute with an alcohol advertisement and a recent incident involving a fan injury, have further tarnished the team’s image.
